What's up

It's been a while (as usual). Sooooooo much has happened. Let me preface this with the fact that I am NOT pregnant. I just wanted to put it out there because I'm going to update you with (mostly) pictures.

We left South Carolina!
We moved to Texas
(and I adjusted to a smaller house)
We were stationed in San Antonio
We got Emma back! (we rehomed her with Tim's dad before Aedan was born)
I lost several pant sizes
Trip & Jack turned 5
And started pre kindergaren
We found out Emma is allergic to TX and has a thyroid problem
We were sick a lot. A whole lot.
Jack is happy!
Trip is happy!
Aedan is happy!
Aedan turned 3

Trip & Jack started kindergarten

There is so much more left to say, but since I started this post last year, I'll leave it at this.

Oh yeah...and we're moving to another part of Texas, soon!

Fat Pants

When Tim and I met (2004) I weighed 110 lbs. I then lost a few pounds due to anxiety. After we settled into a healthy relationship I started gaining a little weight. I was 145 lbs when we got married (a little pudgy, but still healthy for my 5'5" self). After our first pregnancy loss I gained some more weight so I was up to 165 when I got pregnant with the twins. You'd think hyperemesis would have kept the weight off, but it didn't. As soon as I found something I could keep down, I did just that. I weighed almost 200 lbs after they were born. I was able to lose down to the 160's with some help from Weight Watchers. Then we decided to try for another baby and had our second loss. I put on a few more pounds. By the time Aedan was born I weighed 200 lbs again. And I kept gaining. At 215 lbs I decided I'd had enough.

I've dieted over my lifetime, but that doesn't quite work for me. I don't want to spend the rest of my life counting calories or points or anything like that. What I do want to do is kick in my self control and only eat when hungry and watch my portions. There's no reason for me to eat two servings of dinner just because it tastes good! I want to drink more water (not that I drink a whole lot else anyway). I want to be the better example for my children!

Weight issues run all through our families, so they have that working against them already. We can see from Jack's build he'll fight weight, but if he's anything like his Daddy he'll stay so active he'll be able to eat what he wants as long as he doesn't mind being built like a bulldog. Trip seems to take after the men in my family (lucky duck) and will probably be able to eat any and everything he wants and stay stick thin until he's in his 30's. Then he'll have to watch it a tiny bit and make sure to stay active. Aedan is such a mix that I can't begin to guess.

But me? I gain weight just thinking about a cracker. I fought anorexia throughout my late teens and twenties. Then I fought overeating. Food is just too much of a crutch for me. And that has to stop. Now.

So I'm losing weight! I started pushing my plate away after one serving or when I was full whichever came first. I stopped finishing what the kids didn't eat from their plates. I drank a glass of water instead of eating a snack when it was close to meal time. I'm making myself do what is healthy and right. For me. For my husband. For my kids. But mostly for me. I've lost 20lbs so far!

Just a few days ago I signed up at MyFitnessPal.com. It allows me to track my caloric intake, my excercise (hahahahaha), and my weight. It allows me to connect with my friends to give and receive much needed and appreciated support. Most of all, it helps me hold myself accountable for what I eat. I use the calorie counter as a guide (instead of a goal). I love it!

So soon, I'll be saying goodbye to all of my fat pants and hello to a healthier and happier me!

12 days - Day 1

I decided to join a short challenge for the Christmas season. "But you can't even post a picture a day for one month," you say? Well...taking a decent picture is harder for me than what I'm doing, now.

I've joined Sunset Crochet's 12 Days of Christmas Charity! I've committed to making 12 preemie hats in 12 days. Bonnie at Sunset Crochet got together a few other designers and created several adorable patterns for everyone use.

I'm having a blast!

Here's what I completed the first day:

This isn't one of her patterns, but I was anxious to get started.

Ho! Ho! Ho!
I hope to make at least 12 of the little Santa hats in different sizes. I've always read that pretty much any size preemie hat will be accepted since the babies are all different sizes. I think I'd like a seasonal hat if my little one had to spend the holiday in the hospital.

It's amazing how grateful these little hats have made me. Trip spent a few days in the Level II nursery (lowest level of the NICU) due to some O2 levels. He went home with me and Jack, though. I can't imagine what the parents of babies in the NICU go through.

OK, now I'm rambling. I'm lucky enough to have been interrupted by the boys constant chattering and questions about 1,000 times during the few minutes I took to write this post.

Swiftly

Wow...I haven't blogged in six months. Shame on me! In my defense, three is a really really rough age. The big boys have been a handful to say the least. Aedan, as usual, has been a joy. He IS coming into his own with his temper and attitude, though. I think dealing with only one of him makes it easier, though.

But I'm not here to talk about the boys today. I've been getting crafty! Well...craftier, I suppose. I've really enjoyed getting more into knitting. I've crocheted since I was in my early teens (maybe even 11 or 12, I can't quite remember) and finally took the dive and learned how to knit. My wonderful knitty-friends on Twitter have been such a huge help!

And with my love of knitting, my love of nicer yarn has grown. For those of you not into needle crafts, typically nicer (pricier) yarn comes in a hank, which is basically a big loop of yarn. When you buy it, it's usually twisted into a pretzel type shape. It's really not a lot of fun to roll it into a ball by hand, so I got a ball winder for Christmas last year. Yippee!!!! I've had so much fun with it!!!

Unfortunately I was still having a difficult time due to the hanks of yarn getting tangled. For the record, Tim does not make a good helper when trying to keep a hank from getting knotted. I realized I really needed a swift. I looked all over the net and decided I really just didn't want to fork out the money for one. I found a few tutorials, but didn't really love most of them.

Then I found a tutorial I could deal with! I wasn't 100% in love with it, but with Tim's help, we changed a few things.

And here it is:

Here's the tutorial I found. And here are the changes I made:

For "A" I used two 1x36" poplar dowel squares
For "B" I used one 2x2x36" poplar square

My neighbor was kind enough to use his radial saw to make the dado joints for me, negating my need for a rasp or chisel. My other neighbor was kind enough to let me use her drill press, negating my need for a cordless drill.

I used a 5/16 3" hex bolt and 5/16 nut, three 13/32-in x 1-in Nylon Standard (SAE) Flat Washer, and two Nylon Spacers 1/2 x .328 x 1 (each cut in half with a hack saw). I also used a 1/2" spade bit, a 5/8" spade bit (to counter sink the bolt), and a 3/8" spade bit.

I did not use a block of wood or cd or wing nut as a spacer. This is where two of the washers come into play.

Procedure-wise I used the 5/8" spade bit to drill my center holes then took the Xs apart and used a soft hammer to insert the spacers into the holes. Then I put it all together in this order: bolt - B X - two washers - A X - one washer - nut.

I am sooooo happy with my new baby!!! It spins so nicely! I can't wait to need to wind my first ball of yarn...which should be either tonight or tomorrow morning. :-)

Celebration

I can't believe my littlest guy is now a year old. I know everyone says this, but it's so true: It seems like he was just born. I remember it all so vividly. This has been one of the best years of my life. I honestly don't remember a whole lot about the first six months of the boys' lives, but with Aedan, it all sunk in.

The day I was born

Don't give up #HOPE

I'm 2 months old. This is one of 2 times Mommy remembered to take pictures of my with my stickers.

I'm too sexy for this hat!
Can I have some of what you're having?

Trick or Treat!

Happy Little Lumberjack

Merry Christmas!

Hai!
Momma keeps putting me in silly hats.
This crazy photographer thinks I'm going to sit still!
Happy Birthday to Me!

This little guy started out at 7lb 8oz and 19" long; He's now 18lbs 7oz and 29 1/2" high.  He started out this little bundle of joy and now he's this super smiley little toddler that loves to give kisses and "bonks*" and thinks climbing on things is so cool! He has been a joy since the day he was born. Each day is a blessing that I wouldn't trade for anything!  Happy Birthday Aedan, Aedan-Pants**, Mr. Pants, Stinky-Face!

*bonks are when he taps his head against yours. it seems to be a sign of affection.
**I have no clue where the nickname Aedan-Pants came from. It's something I started calling him one day and it just stuck.

Touchy Little Tree

Tim has been on me to decorate for years. I mean, we've only lived in this house for 7 years. What's his rush? Well, I finally got some professional pictures of the boys made and decided I was ready to do it. I bought some frames. I printed out some art. But I had one spot left I wanted to fill.

So I made a handprint tree. I bought a $3 document frame from wallyworld, I bought two stamp pads from Michael's, I gathered my printer, cardstock, and children, and I got to work!

Click on the picture for the printable and instructions.

And here is my end results*:
*I still need to add Tim's prints and replace the glass in the frame.

I downloaded the larger file then used Picasa to add our name and print it as an 8.5 x 11. The boys had so much fun putting their grubby little fingerprints on the tree!

I already had a large picture of the boys framed for the centerpiece and printed this (large blue background version) to go on one side. Now this is the perfect finishing touch!

And since I can't mention a pro pic of the boys and not share my lovelies, so here it is:

And They Are 3

4 days old
1 year old
2 years old
3 years old
Where has the time gone??? I cannot believe my little babies are growing into such precious little boys. They are so sweet and crazy and smart and too-smart-for-my-own-good and adorable and mischievous and loving! They often drive me crazy, but then they turn around and melt me into puddle of mush. I love my firstborn boys so much and am blessed to have have them in my world.

Happy Birthday Boys!
